In May when nature wakes up from winter sleeping, poppies bloom on festive Ukrainian clothes. Embroidery it isn’t only nice clothes, it’s flowered Ukrainian soul– beautiful, rich, filled with love of whole world.

The celebration the world’s day of embroidery started from wearing embroidered shirts by students from Chernivetsky national University of Fedkovych . During some years this day became holiday for whole country and little bit later for celebration began to join Ukrainians from diaspora and another embroidery lover.Today we could say surely that we celebrate the world day of embroidery although holiday isn’t official yet.

The brightest performance which attracts thousand of viwers is parade of embroideries. Like all birds of parsdise alight to rest on participents‘ s shoulders. Which of nations could bother so bright, ethnical suit?

Every year more and more people join t up the celebration this holiday. The day of embroidery is celebrated festively not only in Ukraine but also in Canada where live the biggest Ukrainian diaspora in the world. Under the slogan «Ukrainians we are together» hold a lot of events in Toronto « Put on embroidery at work», walk on embroideries and car гace.

History of embroidery

The first recollaction about Skythians‘ embroidered clothes who lived on teritory of modern Ukraine are fixed on Herodotus’s evidences dated VIII BC. During excavations of barrows were found silver plaques VI BC with imaged men in embroidered shirts. Ornaments on these shirts were similar to that which is embroidered on national suit in XVIII century.

For Ukrainians embroidery was sacred object. For ancient times embroidered shirts was protection, symbol of beauty , health and family’s memory , love and inspiration . When girl prepared for wedding she had to embroider clothes for you yourself and for her bridegroom by own.

From the remotest time embroidery was one of the most favourite kinds of arts and crafts. Women took up this activity. During the centuries content of embroidered symbols gradually lost, although the most common patterns geometrical and vegetative are used today. The red poppies in green leaves are the most common image on the embroidered clothes.

The holiday of embroidery

The holiday of embroidery is celebrated on the third Thursday in May. Organizers call Ukrainians from different parts of Ukraine to wear embroidered shirt by the way to show unity of people and spiritual. There are many surprises and interesting event s will be in program of celebration, the most important from them will be festive walk as in previous years. The monuments of famous people also will wear in embroidery shirts. It will be really unforgettable show.

In all cities will held festive fairs , where you can buy embroidery also will be held master classes , music festival and competitions. The cook will treat national dishes.

Clothes embroidered by sweet heart was symbol of faithfulness and love. The snow- white, pure shirts showed worth attitude husband to his wife. It was supposed that shirt will be white till wife is faithful. In folk resources is mentioned story about man who to be taken prisioner during Russian- Turkish war, embroidered his wife shirt on him saved his life.
