Although the idea of honoring Ukrainian heroes has existed since the formation of our state, the prototype of the modern holiday is considered to be Defender of Ukraine Day, celebrated on October 14.

The holiday first came into effect after President Petro Poroshenko's decree on October 14, 2014. Since 2015, this day has been an official public holiday and a day off. The events of 2014, such as the annexation of Crimea and the Russian Federation's encroachment on the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, further motivated Ukrainians to fight for their sovereignty. Therefore, the emergence of this holiday is a symbol of gratitude to every hero who contributed to a free Ukraine.

Later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law renaming the holiday Defenders of Ukraine Day. Until 2023, the holiday was celebrated on October 14, as it was associated with Ukrainian Cossack Day and the Day of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin. After the Ukrainian church switched to the new calendar, the date of the holiday was moved back 13 days. Therefore, Ukrainians now congratulate each other on the Intercession and Defender's Day on October 1.

What was celebrated in Ukraine on February 23?

Until 2014, Ukraine celebrated Defender of the Fatherland Day, which Ukrainians celebrated every year on February 23. It is impossible not to mention that this holiday was inherited from the USSR. After the Russian Federation's aggressive actions in 2014, Ukraine intended to get rid of its Soviet past and create its own holiday that would glorify our soldiers and our own army. Thus, by decree of President Petro Poroshenko, Defenders of Ukraine Day was established.

It is also interesting that our holiday does not ignore the contribution of women in the struggle for an independent Ukraine, which has become increasingly significant since the start of the full-scale invasion. In contrast, February 23 has long been considered a “men's day” among the people.

How Defenders of Ukraine Day is celebrated today

On this day, Ukrainians congratulate each other on Defender's Day and pay tribute to our brave soldiers for their invaluable contribution to the future of a sovereign Ukraine. On this holiday, solemn events are held in Ukraine, and there is also a tradition of laying flowers and lighting candles of remembrance on the graves of fallen heroes.

There are also many public initiatives, usually implemented by Ukrainian businesses: planting trees and flowers, writing books, raising funds for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, etc.

The connection between Defenders' Day and the Intercession of the Virgin Mary

The date of this important holiday was chosen for a reason. It coincides with one of the most important Christian holidays—the Day of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin. Ukrainian history shows that the Cossacks considered the Mother of God their patroness and treated her with great respect. The Cossack Sich always had a Church of the Intercession, and on the occasion of the holiday, a solemn prayer service was held there.

Ukrainian Cossacks believed that the Mother of God would protect them in battle, so they always prayed before going on campaigns. Images of the Mother of God with an omophorion covering the warriors could often be found on flags and insignia.

That is why on October 14 (according to the old calendar), and now on October 1 (according to the new church calendar), Ukrainians celebrate three holidays at once: the Day of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin, the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks, and the Day of Defenders of Ukraine.

During the reign of Leonid Kravchuk, the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was established, which falls on December 6. However, in practice, this holiday was unable to “defeat” February 23.
The Day of Defenders of Ukraine was officially declared a public holiday only after the Russian Federation's aggression in Donbas began in 2014.
