Geographical peculiarities of ornaments “Podilska embroidery“

The main peculiarity of podilska embroidered shirts is variety and colourfulnees of stiches. The main are insets from hem-stitch “spiders“ which decorated sleeves and gussets. It’s used colourful hem-stitch “shabak“ in podilska embroidery.

Traditionally in podilsky ornament dominates one colour black with small red, dark blue, yellow and green drops. The most wide is one coloured (black with red). Rarely two or tree coloured embroideries.

The main in shirt was “polyk“ (10-20 sm.) which was three divided. Polyk it’s top of the sleeve adorned with wide strip which situated across the sleeve of geometrical ornaments. It looked as mosaic. The traditional technic of podilska embroidery was lower-stitch (calculated stitch which is based on technic «needle forward», it makes from wrong side) The way of making stitch from wrong side caused name of it.

The male shirts were similar to modern famale tunic and had neckband. The narrow strip was necessary.

The embroidery in the southern part of stitches, some elements encompassed by colourful threads which provided Ternopilsky region was made from woollen threads with solid relief and colour effect. This embroidery was situated along whole by side-long strips.

There are many kinds in technic of embroidery in Vinnytsky region: staple-stitch, boarding, lower-stitch, cutting, grained withdrawl and diffferent kinds of colourful, white and black hem –stitches. It uses auxiliary stitches together with main - staple-stitch, needle forward and outline stitches which connect some elements in embroidery.

The embroidery of the southern Ukrainian region have a lot of commmon with emroidery in central regions of but ornaments are completely peculiar and are made by cross and semi cross.
