From Kiyivska Rus times till the beginning of the 20 century, protective elements was everywhere : in houses, in yards, on the clothes and jewellery . Often was hugged horseshoe above the doorway. The girls wore colourful necklace, chaplets and kerchiefs not only for underlining beauty but also for protections against evil spirits, attracting lack and happy fortune. Cossacks (ancient Ukrainian warriors) always had with them decorated of ornaments small sacks with native land which were embroidered by mother, sisters, loved wife; ribbons or pinches of dried medical herbals. Later Christians began to use sanctified icons and crosses as traditional Ukrainian protections.

SYMBOLIC MEANING OF PROTECTIONS

  7. The birds from salt paste are the main symbols of hospitality ,sincerity and warm-hearted.
  8. Mint is well- known symbol of strong health but in the bunch with sage is made powerful duet against disease.
  9. For family hearth will be useful grains such: rice, peas, buckwheat.
  10. Sunflowers bring to house only good people.

Our ancestors believed that real Ukrainian protections give power, protect against evil spirits, help on deals and help traveller luckily go back to home. Peculiar amulets are made for everybody who lived at home also for specific solemn events. Even in last journey dead men were accompanied with bread which was baked according specific technology with ancient bywords and refrains.
