Since ancient times, embroidered shirts have been considered not only the national clothing of Ukrainians, but also an effective talisman with sacred meaning. That is why proper care of embroidered shirts is one of the most important processes for maintaining the aesthetic appearance of clothing. In today's article, we will talk about how to wash an embroidered shirt and how to remove stains from it.

How to identify the fabric and threads in an embroidered shirt before washing

In order to understand how to wash an embroidered shirt correctly, you first need to determine the type of fabric and thread. This approach will help prevent color bleeding and deformation. Before immersing the shirt in water, examine it carefully.

The fabric can be:

  • natural cotton - light and soft to the touch;

  • linen - strong and coarse.

  • synthetic - for example, polyester, which can withstand higher temperatures.

To determine how to wash an embroidered shirt, you need to understand the type of thread used to make the ornament. They can be cotton (less prone to fading) or silk (shiny but sensitive to aggressive detergents).

Of course, the first place to find information about fabrics and threads is the product label. However, if there is no label, you can determine the types of materials by touch — natural fabrics and threads are rough. To make sure that the color will not fade, you can dip an invisible seam in water and see if the color runs.

Determining the type of fabric and thread is a mandatory ritual before washing, as it guarantees that the shirt will retain its original appearance.

Preparing embroidered shirts for washing

Before washing, carefully inspect the embroidered shirt for stains. Fresh stains are easier to clean, so don't delay. It is also important to sort the clothes correctly: black threads should be separated from white ones if you plan to wash several embroidered shirts.

If you are interested in how to care for embroidered shirts, you will need:

  • soft brush;

  • gloves to protect your hands from allergens;

  • laundry detergent.

Experts advise using natural products to reduce environmental impact. Another useful tip is to try washing a small piece of fabric similar to the one your embroidered shirt is made of.

How to wash an embroidered shirt by hand — step-by-step instructions

If you are wondering how to wash an embroidered shirt properly, one of the safest options is hand washing. This is not only a type of cleaning, but also a whole tradition that demonstrates cultural heritage. This is how our ancestors took care of embroidered shirts.

Step 1. Warm water and laundry detergent

Fill the basin with warm water, not hot, as the threads may fade under the influence of high temperatures. The optimal temperature is up to 40°C. Dissolve a mild detergent in the water. It is advisable to use baby soap or other non-aggressive detergents.

Step 2. Soaking the embroidered shirt

Soak the embroidered shirt in a prepared soap solution. Leave the item for 15-20 minutes so that all the dirt can come off naturally. If the embroidered shirt has a colored pattern, you can add a little salt to the basin. It fixes the colors perfectly and prevents them from running.

Step 3. Gentle washing

When talking about how to remove stains from embroidery, it is worth noting that in any case, cleaning involves soaking and gentle washing. Wash areas of fabric without embroidery with light movements, avoiding rubbing the embroidery. This will help prevent the threads from stretching and the pattern from becoming distorted.

Step 4. Rinsing and spinning

Rinse the embroidered shirt in three changes of water. Excess moisture can be squeezed out, but without twisting. Remember that washing an embroidered shirt is a very gentle and delicate process, the main purpose of which is to revive the fabric without damaging the seams and ornamentation.

Can embroidered shirts be washed in a washing machine?

But what about the washing machine? This is the question that many lovers of Ukrainian clothing ask when it comes to washing embroidered shirts made of linen or other fabrics. And although hand washing is considered safe and traditional, using a washing machine is also an option.

Most often, this approach to washing is used when a person does not have the time or desire to wash by hand. If you still decide to use a washing machine, there are a few rules to keep in mind:

  • The cycle should be “delicate” or “hand wash” with minimal mechanical action.

  • The water temperature should be between 30-40°C.

  • You can use a special laundry bag to further protect the fabric and embroidery from deformation.

  • Set the minimum spin cycle or turn this function off altogether to avoid creases.

  • Use liquid detergents without bleach or aggressive ingredients.

  • An additional rinse cycle is also recommended to ensure that all traces of detergent are removed.

By following these tips, you can understand how to wash a linen or cotton embroidered shirt without damaging the garment.

  • Lemon juice - simply mix with water in a 1:1 ratio, apply to the stain for 30 minutes, and wash.

  • Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda - an effective paste formula: 1 tsp baking soda + 1 tsp peroxide, 1 tsp water, apply to the fabric for 15 minutes, and then the embroidered shirt can be washed.

Coffee, tea, wine, and others

Both for removing stains from embroidered shirts and for washing, it is recommended to use non-aggressive detergents in the correct proportions. This will help preserve the integrity and beauty of the fabric and embroidery. Stains should be removed carefully, without rubbing too hard.

Rinsing, drying, and ironing

It is best to dry embroidered shirts on a horizontal surface so that they do not stretch under their own weight. Be sure to smooth out the seams before drying. Avoid exposing colored embroidery to sunlight, as this can cause the pattern to lose its richness.

Ironing embroidered shirts is an art form in itself! It should be done inside out, through cheesecloth, at a temperature of 150-200°C. Linen fabrics can traditionally withstand higher temperatures.  If the product has beads, do not iron it; in this case, it is better to use steaming.
