The threads

Embroidery by cross looks nicely if you choose threads for it in correct way. It’s possible to use line, cotton, hemp or even silk but the most delicate look has moline threads.

The master’s advice: obviously to check the cods of colours on schemas of chosen producer, small difference in shadows could spoil general impression of embroidery

Fabrics

Short instruction for beginners

For getting nice embroidery by cross, Ukrainian ornament should embroider according the scheme so learnt it carefully and choose appropriate colours.
Cut necessary piece of canvas, treat its borders with glue or flizelin or oversew by stitch “through the borders”, and stretch it on tambour.
Mark canvas, set the centre of future image.
If you use moline threads divide necessary number of threads, from one for semi-transparent till six for bigger parts of composition.
It’s the best idea to start the work from centre although it’s possible to embroider from borders till centre. More often embroiders go through the ready canvas by one colour after by another.
Before the starting of raw necessary fix the thread on returning back. It’s enough to make 2-3 stitches and put needle into facial side. In this way pattern will be without knots.
It is possible to embtoider by simple, double, fragmentary or halved cross. At first it should learn the most simple technic: make stitches on squares of canvas diagonally from upper to lower corner putting. Move on row from left to right putting half of cross. Of back return in same way but from right to left. Facial side will embroider by cross but returning side straight lines.
When you finish colourful block fix thread under the 3-4 stiches on returning side.

Master’s advice: For identically look of both sides, use double sided cross. The Moline threads divide for putting through the eye. Optimal length is 30-50 с .m., in this case it won’t tangle and hinder in work.
