Every year, on the 50th day after Easter, Ukrainians celebrate one of the most important religious holidays - Trinity. This holiday has acquired such sacred meaning because of its significance. Trinity is dedicated to the trinity of God - the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This day is also popularly called Green Holiday, Green Sunday or Pentecost.

When do we celebrate Trinity in 2025

In order to understand when Trinity is this year, it is worth remembering the date of Easter and counting 50 days. In 2025, both the Christian and Orthodox churches celebrated Easter on April 20. An interesting fact is that such synchrony is a rather unique phenomenon and occurs extremely rarely, because the churches have different chronology. Trinity will also be celebrated by both denominations at the same time - on June 8.

The Trinity in Ukraine has always had a sacred and special meaning for our people. This holiday inspires believers, gives awareness that everyone should follow the path of faith and fill their lives with spiritual content. On this day, every Ukrainian feels God's love and grace.

What are Green Holidays: meaning and history

Green Holidays represent a cycle of celebrations associated with the Trinity and the traditions and beliefs of the Ukrainian people. During this period, our people honor their ancestors and nature, participate in church ceremonies, and also rejoice at the beginning of summer.

The history of Green Holidays dates back to ancient times. This celebration was initiated by the disciples of Jesus Christ - the apostles. In this way, they wanted to consolidate in people's memory the event that occurred on the 50th day after the Resurrection of Christ. According to biblical tradition, it was on this day that the Holy Spirit appeared to these apostles, who had been praying for fifty days in the Zion Upper Room, which soon became the first temple of Christians.

After Jesus appeared to them, the apostles experienced certain changes: they learned prophecy and healing abilities, and also began to speak in different languages. Knowledge of languages was given to carry the word of God around the world. After these events, the apostles set off on a long journey to tell people about the will of Jesus and his difficult death for the sins of all mankind.

In 381, the doctrine of the Trinity (Green Holidays) was established in Constantinople and this day was recognized as a holiday. The Slavs began celebrating later, 300 years after the Baptism of Rus - at the end of the 13th - beginning of the 14th century. The special meaning of the Green Holidays lies in the understanding and realization that all God's persons are equal and consubstantial.

Many people are curious about what day the green holidays begin in Ukraine. Since the Green Holidays 2025 are primarily associated with the Trinity, this year we can talk about the beginning of the Green Holidays cycle on June 8.

Traditions of celebrating the Trinity in Ukraine

Since the Trinity holiday is religious, services are traditionally held in the church, which usually include the Divine Liturgy and Great Vespers.

The customs of the Ukrainian people on Trinity include a feast with friends and all relatives. On this day, every housewife could demonstrate her culinary talents. The main dish for the celebration was and remains a loaf.

Our ancestors also organized folk festivities, which included round dances, singing and dancing. Such traditions are also relevant for the Green Holidays 2025.

On Trinity Day in Ukraine, it was also customary to get married, because it was believed that if you get married on Pentecost, and the wedding itself is played on Pokrov, then a happy family life is guaranteed. There are also many traditions associated with the period preceding the Green Holidays. On these days, the ancestors of the Ukrainian people organized cleaning, because on the holidays themselves this cannot be done, as well as sewing, washing, etc.

How homes and churches are decorated for Trinity

When the Green Holidays begin, churches are abundantly decorated with greenery, and mowed grass is placed on the floor. According to the traditions of our people, icons are also decorated with spring flowers and branches of young trees. Birch acquires special significance on this day, because its branches are considered a symbol of the Holy Spirit. It is because of this that most believers bring birch branches to church to consecrate them and place them in their homes.

In addition to birch branches, bouquets of herbs are also brought to the temples, which are supplemented with the following plants:

  • common butterbur;
  • mint;
  • lovage;
  • linden branches;
  • wormwood.

Such bouquets are consecrated and hung in the home to protect against evil spirits.

What not to do on Trinity: main prohibitions

When Trinity begins in Ukraine, there is also a list of prohibitions. If you intend to properly celebrate the Green Holidays in 2025, then remember that you absolutely cannot:

  • Work physically - any physical labor is prohibited, because Trinity is a time for rest, prayer and spiritual purification.
  • Walk through the forest unnecessarily - it is believed that nature is especially alive on this day, and therefore you can meet a mavka, a mermaid and other creatures in the forest.
  • Break trees and bushes - applies to all plants, especially willow. Our ancestors believed that on this day, the souls of the dead and the spirit of nature are present in the branches of plants.
  • Swimming in water bodies - in some regions of Ukraine, it was believed that on these holidays there may be mermaids in water bodies who can “pull” a person. Therefore, in ancient times, swimming on Trinity was avoided.

Among the more pragmatic prohibitions on Trinity in Ukraine are the following:

  • to quarrel and insult, to wish someone harm;
  • to refuse help;
